The country is in for a horrific day of weather as the Bank Holiday Weekend draws to a close.

After a weekend of relatively unsettled weather, conditions are set to take a nose dive from today as Met Eireann issued multiple weather warnings.

Currently a status yellow wind a rain warning is in place for 11 counties with weather chiefs warning that it will be “unseasonably wet and windy.”

The wind and rain warning is in place for Clare, Cork, Kerry, Limerick, Waterford, Donegal, Galway, Leitrim, Mayo, Sligo, Wexford.

A forecaster said of the warnings: “Southwesterly winds, veering northerly through Monday will reach mean speeds of 50 to 65 km/h with gusts up to 100 km/h, particularly in coastal areas and on higher ground.

“Heavy rain in conjunction with the wind will lead to spot flooding with a risk of wave overtopping in coastal areas.”

The warning took effect from 3am this morning and will be in place until 10pm tonight.

Unfortunately the wet and windy weather will remain right through the night and into tomorrow.

A forecaster said: “A wet and windy start with a band of heavy rain bringing the risk of spot flooding. The rain will break up into showers and some brighter spells through this afternoon, the showers heavy and squally at times over the northern half of the country.

“Fresh to strong and gusty southerly winds will veer westerly by afternoon, and continue to reach gale force in coastal areas of the southeast, southwest and west throughout the day. Highs of just 10 to 12 degrees.

“Staying rather windy tonight but many areas will become dry with clear spells. There will be scattered showers too, these mainly over the northern half of the country, and especially in northwestern coastal counties. Lowest temperatures of 3 to 6 degrees in fresh northwesterly winds, remaining strong on coasts.

“A cool blustery day with a mix of sunny spells and scattered showers. Some of the showers will be heavy with the risk of hail and isolated thunderstorms, especially over Ulster, where the showers may merge into longer spells of rain through the afternoon. Highs of just 9 to 11 degrees, in fresh and gusty northwesterly winds.”
