Mitsubishi Motors Thailand: 6 million units in 60 years – Auto News

Mitsubishi Motors Thailand has a big reason to celebrate this 2021. This year, the company is celebrating its 60th anniversary. But more importantly, the Mitsubishi Thailand outlet also hit a production milestone.

Ever since Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC) commenced operations in Thailand back in 1961, the automaker has since built six million units. Yes, that is from the Thailand plant alone. It’s no surprise the Thailand plant is possibly MMC’s most crucial hub outside of Japan today.

The majority of the vehicles built at Mitsubishi Thailand get exported around the world. Models built at the ASEAN hub include the Triton/Strada, Mirage, Attrage/Mirage G4, and Montero Sport/Pajero Sport. More recently, the plant also began assembling the Outlander PHEV. That makes the Mitsubishi Motors Thailand plant the first facility outside of Japan to do so. From Thailand, these vehicles are then sold to over 120 countries globally. Furthermore, most of the 6 million units are also sold abroad, with 4.4 million being exported to these countries – including the Philippines.

“Thailand is an important hub for us, and MMTh has become our largest export base in the ASEAN region with the support from the Royal Thai Government. MMTh produces popular Triton, Mirage, and so on, and we have started production of Outlander PHEV, a premium plug-in hybrid electric SUV with high performance but eco-friendly vehicle that attracts global attention, in the end of 2020. We are willing to offer even more attractive products to our customers,” said Takao Kato, chief executive officer of MMC.

If you’re wondering what Mitsubishi Thailand’s six-millionth unit is, it is none other than their most successful export model – the Triton/Strada. From the looks of it, the Strada in question happens to be an Athlete variant, finished in bright orange. Whether Mitsubishi will keep the six millionth unit or sell it to a customer as a standard model is still uncertain.

Mitsubishi Thailand reached its milestone of one million units produced in 2003, two million in 2010, three million in 2013, four million in 2015, and five million in 2018. With another one million built in just two years, it won’t be long before the Thailand hub reaches ten million units produced.
