Saffas snapped up in Hundred draft

Heinrich Klaasen was rewarded for his excellent white-ball form at The Hundred draft on Thursday.

The Proteas wicketkeeper-batsman, who hit an unbeaten 119 off 61 balls in the third ODI against the West Indies in Potchefstroom on Tuesday, will play for the Oval Invincibles in the 2023 tournament.

Thirty-eight-year-old Netherlands and former Proteas spinner Roelof van der Merwe, who starred for the Sunrisers Eastern Cape in the inaugural SA20, was picked up by the Welsh Fire having represented the Northern Superchargers last year, while Joburg Super Kings batsman Leus du Plooy was signed by the Southern Brave having turned out for the Welsh Fire in 2022.

Proteas all-rounder Wayne Parnell was retained by the Northern Superchargers as was Namibia and former SA all-rounder David Wiese.

Thirty players were picked across the eight men’s teams, who will be able to sign two more players as ‘wildcards’ after the group stage of England’s Blast T20 tournament.

In the women’s Hundred, Proteas T20 Women’s World Cup finalists Shabnim Ismail (Welsh Fire), Laura Wolvaardt (Manchester Originals) and Chloe Tryon (Southern Brave) were all picked up in the draft, while Marizanne Kapp was retained by the Oval Invincibles.

Proteas discards Lizelle Lee (Trent Rockets) and Dané van Niekerk (Oval Invincibles) were also bought in the draft.

Van Niekerk recently retired from all international cricket after being left out of South Africa’s T20 World Cup squad for fitness reasons.
